It’s good to be young, but let’s not kid ourselves / It’s better to pass on through those years and come out the other side / With our hearts still beating / Having stared down demons / Come back breathing
I feel like so many of my friends are hurting lately, myself included. Maybe that’s not new, but it’s overwhelming. I care about everyone but I’ve historically not been a good shoulder to cry on because of my own issues. Instead I’d like to recommend one coping mechanism I have, and that is The Mountain Goats.
I have over 400 TMG songs on my itunes and that’s not even all of them. John Darnielle is consistently hailed as one of the best lyricists in music, and the bulk of his output has been stories about other people, but he also has very personal autobiographical albums and I know several people who would swear he saved their lives. And those poetic lyrics are set to really gorgeous music. He’s also an (afaik) unproblematic fave who once, when I interviewed him prior to giving up my life in Florida (my album of choice is Tallahassee and oh is that a story,) told me “you’ll walk a lot more in New York, drink more water” and signed my album “remember to hydrate.” I’m not sure how he exists but I’m glad he does. Then, to top it off, he’s an acclaimed novelist now.
Read wikipedia for album themes and pick one to start with. Ask me for recommendations. Music alone can’t save us, and there is more to mental health obviously, but a good song helps, and a meaningful song helps more.
Take care of yourself, lovelies, and remember to hydrate.
“When you punish a person for dreaming his dream don’t expect him to thank or forgive you.”
this looks like a half-finished poster for a wacky 80s comedy where travis is trying to teach justin and griffin to be cool
See I was gonna say a half-finished poster for a wacky 80’s comedy in which Justin and Griffin are trying to kill the others for inheritance money and Travis is completely oblivious to their constant failed Spy vs. Spy-style assassination attempts.
